    • Airline: Transwede
    • Date: 23 January 2009
    • Notes: Extratropical Cyclone 'Klaus' (meaning 'outside of the tropics') originated from the sub-tropical Atlantic (west of North Africa) on Thursday night (22nd) and quickly pushed northeastwards throughout Friday (23rd). At midnight on Friday it had a centre of 1001mb, but deepened very rapidly, to a centre of 969mb at 1800GMT Friday. That's an average pressure drop of 1.78mb/hour. The storm made landfall in SW France during Saturday morning (24th). Due to the nature of it's origins, it brought a lot of warm, moist air from the sub-tropics on it's southern flank, which saw some very high daytime temperatures of over 20C in some places. Winds gusted well over 100mph, causing 1.5million homes in southwest France to experience power-cuts.
